Uhuru is the Swahili word for “freedom”. Originally popularized by the Mau Mau in Kenya during the 1950s revolution to overturn British imperialism, Uhuru is the name of the worldwide African Liberation Movement led by the African People’s Socialist Party and Chairman Omali Yeshitela. It is used as a greeting to keep freedom on our minds at all times.
